Before you begin your search...

Identify keywords for database searching

You will use keywords when conducting a database search. Keywords are words that represent a major concept related to your topic.

Identify the major concepts of your research question or topic. Typically there are between two and four major concepts.

Example: obesity and soda

Find synonyms and related terms:

Concept 1: Obesity Concept 2: Soda
Body weight Soft drinks
Overweight Carbonated beverages
Obese Coca-cola
Body Mass Index Sweetened beverages
BMI

Where to find keyword ideas?

  • Read background material (from encyclopedias for example) and note the language that is used.
  • Read one article that meets your needs and note the language that is used.
  • Do a broad database search. Note the Tag/Subject terms that are used. These can be found in two areas on the results page:

1.

2. Under the "All filters" section.

TIP: When constructing your search, be concise. Stay away from sentence-like language (such as “effects of soda on contributing to childhood obesity”). The more words you enter, the fewer the results you will get. A search such as “obesity AND soda” will yield more results.
