ChatGPT and Generative AI: Resources and Considerations for Instruction

While we are by no means experts on Generative AI, such as ChatGPT, you can use this guide to learn more about the resources available.

Creating a Policy

When creating a policy surrounding the use of ChatGPT in regards to academic integrity:

  • Make it clear to students by documenting it (i.e. in the syllabus).
  • Be specific. Give examples of how using it will violate academic integrity.
  • Have it be part of a conversation. Talk to your students about it. Collaborate with them on the policy wording.
  • If there are certain assignments or activities that you will be allowing students to use ChatGPT or other AI, explicitly state that in your policy statement as well as in your assignment/activity directions.

Policy-Making and Instruction Resources

We asked ChatGPT about plagiarism

Prompt: "Is using ChatGPT to write my paper considered plagiarism?"

ChatGPT responded:

"Using ChatGPT to generate content for your paper can potentially be considered plagiarism if you do not properly attribute the information generated by the model. Plagiarism involves presenting someone else's work, ideas, or words as your own without giving them appropriate credit.

ChatGPT is a language model trained on a vast amount of text from the internet, including books, articles, and websites. When you use ChatGPT to generate text, it can provide you with suggestions, ideas, and even complete paragraphs. However, since the model's responses are based on pre-existing text, it's crucial to acknowledge and cite the sources if you use the generated content in your paper.

To avoid plagiarism when using ChatGPT, consider the following:

  1. Use ChatGPT as a tool for brainstorming and generating ideas rather than relying on it for the entirety of your paper. Combine the model's suggestions with your own knowledge and research.

  2. Clearly distinguish between your own words and the text generated by ChatGPT. If you decide to incorporate specific phrases or sentences from the model's output, make sure to properly quote and cite them.

  3. Provide proper attribution for any sources referenced by ChatGPT. If the model generates information or ideas that you want to use, treat it as you would any other source and include appropriate citations.

  4. Review and edit the content generated by ChatGPT to ensure it aligns with your own understanding and style. This will help you avoid copying the model's output verbatim.

By following these guidelines and properly attributing the information generated by ChatGPT, you can avoid plagiarism and ensure ethical academic conduct." (OpenAI, 2023)
